If You Can’t Beat Them, Join Them: Recreational Fitness Programs Competing with the Boutique Fitness Market, and How Technology Can Help

Program Description: Since 2001, it has been well documented that campus recreation programs are challenged to 1) increase student participation, 2) identify new revenue sources and 3) recruit and retain new members such as faculty and staff (Franklin, 2001; Dyer, 2019). Additionally, the boutique fitness boom (e.g., yoga, Pilates, boxing, cycling, barre, bootcamp and H.I.I.T. studios) has produced additional market competition. These studios account for 40% of the market, an increase of 120% in 4-years, compared to a 20% growth in traditional fitness centers and recreational fitness programs (Olick, 2019). In this presentation, we will discuss how incorporating key elements made popular by the boutique fitness industry, such as ‘experiential fitness’ and wearable technologies, will reinvigorate campus recreation programs through student participation and adherence and revenue generation.

Capital Cup: Creating Club Competition

Program Description: As Sport Club Coordinators and Assistant Directors, we tend to focus more on the off the field development of our clubs rather than their competitive success. With the University of Richmond and Virginia Commonwealth University being 6 miles apart, we found a way to support our clubs competitive interest through the Capital Cup. Now in its 5th year, come learn how the Capitol Cup was created, how it has grown, how we plan to expand it in the future, and ways you can host something similar.
Learning Objectives: Attendees will be able to evaluate the feasibility of hosting a similar event at their school. Attendees will be prepared to organize and propose a similar event to their supervisors.

Program Description: Moody Nolan Architects join the CENTERS at Jacksonville State University staff to discuss current recreation design + programming trends. Each trend is revisited after one year of operation of the new Recreation and Fitness Center. The facility was designed in 2017, opened 2019 and operated for 1 year before COVID. The impact of COVID on certain tends will be discussed.

Program Description: With the majority of on-campus programs and activities shifting to virtual platforms, student staff no longer have the same opportunities to interact with each other nor their supervisors. Now more than ever it is important to find creative ways to stay connected and promote community within our departments. We will discuss the concept of student staff engagement as well as strategies for implementing programs to nurture student growth and development within and beyond Campus Recreation.

Program Description: Leveraging Your Strengths as a Resilience Strategy during Challenging Times: Feeling overwhelmed by the difficult times we are going through? Perhaps you feel like you’re swimming against the current or having difficulty navigating ambiguity and need to find your “zone” again. During our most difficult days, it’s imperative we lean on our natural talents and strengths to bolster us through uncertain times. Share your story and learn about resiliency through a strengths lens by discussing what you do best, using your natural talents, and how focusing on your strengths has helped you be successful in the past. A certified CliftonStrengths coach will facilitate an exploration of viewing our strengths through a new resilience lens to successfully navigate our current reality. (Participants do not need to take the CliftonStrengths assessment to participate).

25 Years and Counting: Why Your Big-Time Special Events are Your Best Asset… Even During a Pandemic

Program Description: The Student Recreation Center opened at East Carolina University in 1997 to much fanfare and a jump in an ice-cold outdoor pool. Twenty-five annual jumps later the event is facing an untimely pause in the face of pandemic and the uncertainties. For many programs and institutions these signature recreation events provide memorable experiences for thousands of students every year. With the recent situation in the US these events are under increased scrutiny and possible eliminations due to safety and financial concerns. This presentation discusses the process for evaluating large-scale special events for future utility and feasibility on campus.
Learning Objectives: Participants will evaluate current special events to determine continued feasibility for 2021. Participants will identify three modifications for future special events to mitigate risk. Participants will analyze current financial barriers to hosting large events in 2021.
